Goes from "adult woman doing a pretty convincing teenage boy voice" to "adult man doing a very bad teenage boy voice". Especially when he speaks softly, it's just bad man c'mon. Though his name is Spike Spencer and that name is cool enough I can't discredit the guy too bad.

I can't tolerate most English dubs. I can't. I hear the original voice-acting and I realize that the American actors aren't hitting the right emotional marks; there's a kind of flatting and sharping effect where I'm continually irritated by the sensation that the American voices are emotionally disconnected from the action, and it (almost) never feels right. but I can think of a couple of dubs that seemed quite reasonable to me in comparison to the original voice-acting.

btw I think one of the best things that ever happened to me was our partner Daria showing us the 2003 "Fullmetal Alchemist" with Japanese audio; it means that, to my knowledge, I have never had to endure Vic Mignogna's voice-acting in anything.

Not to hate on Spike Spencer even more but he simply Cannot Scream like Megumi Ogata

but to be fair, I don't think anyone could top it. This scream feels raw, guttural, there's no way in hell the VA didn't hurt herself doing this scream, it's frighteningly real.

I'm kind of the opposite. To me even a bad dub (unless it's unwatchably bad) is better than no dub; I can't watch a show and read subtitles at the same time, I can't have one eyeball looking at the screen and another at the bottom of it, like, my eyeballs just don't work that way

huh. I wonder if having strabismus actually makes subtitles easier for us. we prefer to have them on even when we're watching movies in English, because we like having the visual feedback of subtitles for dialogue. but our eyes really do tend to act a bit independently of each other ~Chara

Having subtitles can make it easier for me too, because if I don't catch something I can glance down to see what I missed. But if I'm having to watch the words on the screen as my only source of information as to what the characters are saying, I don't get to watch the show during any parts with dialogue.

After having already watched all of it in Japanese, trying to watch it again in English feels like a weird knockoff no matter what 🤷

I go back and fourth between dubs and subs; if it's a comedy like Golden Boy I'll go with the dub cuz gags usually land a bit better that way. But something like Evangelion? Seiyuus all the way. And I completely agree with you on Megumi Ogata, her screams are just gut wrenching. She even puts horror movie heroines to shame!

Although credit where it's due, I think Spike's performance in the Funimation Rebuilds are a sizable step up from his OG performance. A stand out scene is in 2.0 when Shinji stomps on Nerv HQ, his voice realistically cracking while angry yelling really does hit. He still at times sounds like a dude playing a teen, but I think overall his performance there fits the more assertive Rebuild Shinji than his more demure OG counterpart.
