I like how when Russel T. Davies wanted to do a series-long arc, he was way more subtle in his approach than Moffat or Chibnall. Like, watching Series 2, it is consistently reinforced that people across time and space lament the loss of loved ones and would do anything to speak to them again, how there is a barrier that simply cannot be crossed, and how desperate we are as a species to reach beyond the veil and make contact again with our loved ones.

And so it builds thematically, rather than literally towards the series finale. Very cool 👍

okay I might have been a little too generous because Russel does have characters very clearly say "Torchwood" at least once in every single episode. It's a lot less subtle than "Bad Wolf" was in Series 1, too. And "Bad Wolf" was a hell of a lot cooler, imo.

Davies was the best show runner/writer. Moffat had some fun episodes but couldn’t write or run a full season to save his life. I haven’t seen any Chibnall so i can’t comment on that.

I don't necessarily agree, though I do think Moffat got a lot better when he didn't keep trying to make each season arc more universe-threatening than the last. Capaldi's season arcs are top tier imo, the play between him and Missy was exceptional character writing and especially near the end it got very small scale and character focused. It feels a lot more appropriate for the Doctor to end a regeneration saving some random people he just bumped into in the middle of deep space (12th Doctor) rather than saving the whole universe from some cataclysmic conspiracy (11th Doctor). Smith was a good Doctor with some good episodes but it sucks that all 3 of his seasons kept trying to top each other on the end of the universe stuff. Wish he'd gotten some smaller-scale arcs like Capaldi did.
