hilarious that the Doctor, after his first adventure with Martha Jones, a black woman, decides the best place to take her for her first TARDIS trip is to 16th century London. Did he think about that at all

If I'm not mistaken, a couple of episodes past that, she "needs" a lecture about how racism is bad and we shouldn't judge people on appearances, so...someone thought about it and came to exactly the wrong conclusion. I sometimes wonder if there's an industry term for "let's teach the Black woman about the horrors of racism that she clearly hasn't learned yet," because it happens a lot in science fiction, for some reason.
Unrelated crackpottery: Is this the episode that starts with the pictures of the wife and granddaughter? Based on the pictures they chose and what Freema Agyeman looks like, I assumed that the episode was setting up a thing where Martha was part of the family. But no, just general bad thinking about race...
nah, it's The Shakespeare Code, the one with the witches who just blatantly do magic and shit with the Doctor going "oh no it's just a different kind of science" cute episode overall though. One of the witches uses a voodoo doll to stab him in the heart to try and kill him, but luckily as the audience and Martha both know he's got two of those. Fun bit where he complains about only having one heart working ("how do you people cope?!") and Martha has to give him some good whacks on the chest to jumpstart the other one again.
I think the one with the portraits you're thinking of might be the two-parter Human Nature/Family of Blood, the one where the Doctor has to turn himself into a human to hide from some fucked up aliens. Strands Martha alongside him in 1913, forcing her to take on the disguise of a servant, and she receives quite a bit of racism, not just from the other humans, but even from the Doctor, his human disguise perhaps a little too perfect.
I have observed several of the doctors try not to think as much as possible
