It's definitely a black mark on the classic series and ruins what would be one of the best stories of the entire show.
Don't forget that while this story was being shown the BBC was also running a light enteratinment show starring white people in blackface that had been running for about 20 years by then (it got cancelled the next year in 1978).
I'm eager to see what the people involved will have to say in the special features haha
