Current Hyperfixation: Wizard of Oz

  • He/Him

I use outdated technology just for fun, listen to crappy music, and watch a lot of horror movies. Expect posts about These Things. I talk a lot.

Check tags like Star Trek Archive and Media Piracy to find things I share for others.

One of the things that constantly bugs me about the site is a lack of responsiveness. Now, I'm not saying "ugh the site is too SLOW make it FASTER everything should load in HALF A MILLISECOND" I fully understand this is a small operation that is doing its best to scale with the influx of users.

It's not the load times themselves that bother me, but rather that as the site is loading, there is no indication it is doing so. This is particularly noticeable on mobile. If I tap the rehost button because I want to add something, it might take me to the rehost screen instantly... Or it might take 30 seconds. Again, I'm fine if it takes 30 seconds, I totally understand, but about 5 seconds into that wait I'm 100% going to question myself on whether I actually tapped the rehost button or missed it. And then 5 seconds after that I'll wonder again. And then I'll be certain I've tapped it... But then begin to doubt myself again.

My point is the site needs some indicator of loading, processing, of just give us a quick second...

And while a standard loading bar or spinning circle would certainly full this purpose more than adequately... I think we can go harder than that.

Two words: Thinking Eggbug.

Just a lil' eggbug thinkin' real hard in the center of your screen as the page loads. Not only would this give me confirmation that I tapped the button correctly, it would fill me with delight every time I saw the lil' guy doin' his best. you go get 'em little fella!!! 30 seconds is too little to spend looking upon His Grace.

maybe it could even be a little animated. tappin his noggin, flutterin' around or somethin'... frantically shufflin' papers in a loop while text reads "Eggbug is organizing, one moment..."

I'm layin' down the ideas here, they're free, no compensation needed.
