Current Hyperfixation: Wizard of Oz

I use outdated technology just for fun, listen to crappy music, and watch a lot of horror movies. Expect posts about These Things. I talk a lot.

See: The Night of the Doctor, which portrays 8's regeneration into War. We see a young John Hurt in his reflection at the end - the quite fascinating implication that the War Doctor / Doctor No More we see in DotD is at the end of a very long and very weary life fighting the Time War for potentially centuries (given what we can infer about how long a Time Lord can live within a single regeneration and how long it takes a regeneration to visibly age)

I'm watching this now; we have some, uh, personal entanglements with the Doctor that we're attempting to sort out. (yeah I know that just sounds loopy). what's the context for this video?

is the Paul McGann semi-American Doctor Who special worth watching? I remember when it came out I merely assumed it would suck and never bothered; I'd known the Doctor from some VHS recordings in early college years and was also, at the time, regrettably way too fond of British entertainment and correspondingly scornful of American stuff. ~Chara

Sorry for not giving context beforehand: this came out after the Series 7 finale "The Name of the Doctor" - the one that ended with the dramatic reveal of John Hurt as The War Doctor. It was a surprise minisode leading up to The Day of the Doctor that was intended to fill in the gaps and explain where John Hurt fit into the overall timeline, and give context to what led the Doctor to fight in the Time War.

Personally I think Paul McGann is a wonderful actor who gives a delightfully tongue-in-cheek slightly hammy but still taking it seriously performance, reminiscent of Tom Baker in the best ways. He's certainly the highlight of the TV movie (him and that gorgeous TARDIS interior) but it is an otherwise confused and muddy film, trying in equal parts to appeal to fans of the past while also trying to reinvent the format and not really succeeding at either. There's some good stuff in there and I think it's worth checking out as a curiosity, but it's not, like, integral viewing.

ah, I find that I can watch the episode on DailyMotion. argh, trying to watch a bunch of Doctor episodes out of order is an exercise in willing frustration...

have I told you my goofy private idea that there's a John Hurt Nexus of some kind? Hurt has roles in so many works of popular fiction of central importance that he seems to transcend entertainment, somehow. John Hurt being the Doctor (or an anti-Doctor, perhaps?) seems altogether too fitting ~Chara

He leaks into franchises like a cognitohazard - the reason he felt so kinda shoehorned into Doctor Who is because the showrunners didn't consent to his appearance. The reason you've never seen him since DotD is because the SCP Foundation finally wrangled him before he completely took the show over.

Also yeah the TV movie is not in a good state licensing-wise since it was a US/UK co-production that didn't go over well.
