I think it's very interesting that The Office (US) suddenly remembered that it was an in-universe documentary being filmed by real people and intended to be released within that show's universe, and turned that into a somewhat interesting plot thread in the latter seasons.
And then I think it's extremely funny that Parks and Recreation, one of the most obvious and direct knockoffs of the show's formula, never had that element in the first place - there is no in-universe reason for the cutaways with the characters speaking directly to the camera. There is never any acknowledgement of a filming crew. The cutaways are still treated with this air of "they're trying to put on a face for the cameras" even though they would have no reason to do so. This culminates in the funniest bullshit bit that show ever pulled by setting its final season in the future.
