I use outdated technology just for fun, listen to crappy music, and watch a lot of horror movies. Expect posts about These Things. I talk a lot.

Check tags like Star Trek Archive and Media Piracy to find things I share for others.

thinking about how US private datacenters aren't seen as a strategic target worth protecting even though like 80% of local government is keeping everything on google sheets civilian edition and also like half the entire GDP of california is just cloud services for rando businesses, which themselves are much more than half the GDP of california, trusting the datacenters will just exist forever even as they spin up the war rhetoric

Did You Know that, along with datacenters, most of the internet relies on interconnects in a single building and loss of that would cause capacity to crash enough to Cause Problems unless netflix pulls the Big Red-Handled Knife Switch that turns all the streams to 160p?

I went on a tour of the BMO datacentre that processes the bank's transactions and they had a whole set of mitigations built in, assuming that an attack would happen. The site was chosen to be far enough from Toronto to probably survive a nuclear attack, had bollards to guide car/truck bombers into getting stuck on berms, hard lines to two separate area codes, redundant backup generators, on-site wells placed in two separate watersheds, architecture to naturally ventilate air upwards in the case of an airborne pandemic (I didn't get to follow up on how well that worked during the early covid days, sadly), etc.

They wanted to be absolutely sure that you could still do your banking mid-apocalypse
