Current Hyperfixation: Wizard of Oz

I use outdated technology just for fun, listen to crappy music, and watch a lot of horror movies. Expect posts about These Things. I talk a lot.

Check tags like Star Trek Archive and Media Piracy to find things I share for others.

I have just an incredibly powerful soft spot for the Series of Unfortunate Events movie. Was in love with it as a kid, when I was stuck in my aunt and uncle's Arizona home for some holiday it was one of the only disks they had and I watched it so many times while there. I also am hopelessly in love with the movie tie in PC game they released. Very of its time game very funky. I also think of Lemony Snicket's commentary track in which he sings about the leeches scene in despair, which much to his probably chagrin makes it a bit more endearing to me.

I love it so much I own it on DVD (the original copy I had as a young'in), blu-ray, and the CD soundtrack. I do seem to recall owning the GameCube version of the video game as well, briefly.

I remember both Unfortunate Events and Hitchhiker's Guide came from the golden era of DVD menus, Unfortunate Events' menu was extremely stylized to look like the covers and chapter artwork from the books, animated, and you'd get a different one on random every time you put the disc in, each referencing a different part of the film. Hitchhiker's Guide's menu might take the cake for me, though, because its menu was stylized to exactly mimic the look, sound, and function of the Guide in the film - it really felt like you were navigating the Hitchhiker's Guide. It even featured an Improbabilitu Drive button that would launch you to a random chapter or special feature haha

Ever day I miss the art form that was old DVD menus for movies. I had forgotten how lovely the unfortunate events one was, and sadly I never got to see the Hitchhiker's guide one but lord I would've loved that improbability drive feature to death. I almost want to go out of my way and collect dvd movies just for the menu gimmicks. This reminded me of the old games they used to program into them, I know one of the Madagascar movies had a little game you could play with your remote that was just a bunch of QTEs.

Also I must recommend Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - for some reason it and ASoUE are linked in my mind, not just for having a very long name and coming out a year apart, but also for feeling pretty similar tonewise with the family friendly early 2000s sardonic comedy. I mean, in the opening ten minutes the Earth gets blown up, so

Oh! I have seen hitchhikers guide too of course, I do see the tie now that you point it out kinda funny to think about. And I do have to thank you for linking the archive footage of those DVD menus I am gonna have a good evening watching those I think!!
