I remember in 2020 the Texas DMV (for some reason actually the DPS - Department of Safety - even though Texas does have an agency bearing the DMV name. whatever.) switched to appointment instead of walk-in because the waiting area was closed for obvious reasons. I thought it was infinitely better - being able to pick a time, show up at that time, get in immediately, do what you need, in and out in like 5-10 minutes? It was bliss. I thought "they should keep it this way forever."

They did. I have now had to notarize several documents for people using expired driver licenses as ID because the soonest appointment they could make at the DMV was like, 6 months out??? So maybe the actual solution is to abolish cars.

The whole notion of ID expiring is fucking dumb imo. I got turned away trying to buy a drink at a bar because my drivers license expired. Like bitch does that make me no longer 24 years old??? Did 4 years fall off my age when my driving privilege lapsed?

I always just check if it's not a fake card and then log the iss/exp dates and the DL# just to be safe (normally I just record the exp date, in accordance with state guidelines). Like, what, am I supposed to suspect this person of producing a really expensively high quality fake ID and they put an expired date on it? If anything it being expired makes it less likely to be a fake, because a fake ID user wouldn't be that stupid.

I would understand Driver License expiry if it was for something sensible like "you have to take this short test to see if you still remember the laws to follow when driving" but they almost never do that? Like, it expires, so you have to renew it. And. That's it. They don't re-examine you, hell in Texas you can renew it entirely online like twice and they only make you come in physically after that is to take a new picture of you because after 2 online renewals your picture will be like 8 years old.

Convinced ID expiry is entirely a racket for the states to collect more income from renewal and processing fees.
