I use outdated technology just for fun, listen to crappy music, and watch a lot of horror movies. Expect posts about These Things. I talk a lot.

Check tags like Star Trek Archive and Media Piracy to find things I share for others.

  1. I don't really hate it as bad as everyone else does
  2. it does feel very Of Latter-Day Corporate Type Design, though; it gave me strong IBM Plex and Google Product Sans vibes, and after looking at an IBM Plex specimen it's basically indistinguishable -- the one difference I can spot easily is that the gg sans M has splayed legs and the IBM Plex M doesn't
  3. I know it's silly to complain about it being samey on a web site which also uses a grotesque sans serif but at least we didn't have to pay someone to design ours

if it weren't for the fact that my username starts with an M, I wouldn't have noticed the font change at all.

in reply to @vogon's post:

I don't like everything moving to really light weight fonts. New Discord sans looks ok at 100% 1x but I often view webpages zoomed in because my eyesight is getting worse and Discord is now harder to read at 110% than it is at 100% because the font weight becomes actually lighter somehow. Some kind of low-resolution hinting disables or something.

Also it doesn't make it unreadable or anything but the little curves at the bottoms of "l" and "i" were clearly designed for super retina Apple screens and on Windows at 1x those little curves look really, really bad. The computer is simply not able to display them properly.

I hate how every corporation that pays someone to design a font for them winds up expressing their corporate individuality by having an overly complicated g. The g in discord sans isn't as bad as the awful one in twitter sans but it doesn't need to be that complicated. The letter g is not very important. You are not aiding my use of the program by drawing special attention to appearances of the letter g.

I am not enraged by discord sans but if I could turn it off I would.

at least it's not that awful angular thing over on twitch. ugh

super light fonts on windows are fuckin awful. every website wants to use the thinnest shit because it looks fine on a 4k retina imac but over here i have to keep a button that literally overwrites every font with comic sans because it's not afraid to take up more than one pixel of width per stroke

edit: the absolute worst is when some web design chucklenut decides to combine Fancy Thin Font with like, color #666 or worse. nothing like ensuring your already light gray text becomes unreadable

I agree! grotesque is a term of art among typographers which means that the letterforms aren't purely geometric, and often that they feel more old-fashioned than some of the more modern subcategories of sans serif typefaces like humanist and geometric sans serifs

imo the main issue is that the new font interacts really poorly w japanese text because they have a glyph for ツ but no other characters, so it falls back to a completely different font, which looks awful

Ugh, yeah. I'm in a bilingual Japanese/English discord and this is going to mess with text rendering there a ton. Not happy about it!

I recognize that discord's target market is European-language natives, but treating ツ and ノ as drawing characters and not, like, letters in someone's native writing system is deeply annoying

The only including certain characters in Japanese thing is particularly atrocious, since they only did it for a single emoji. Feels like they should have commissioned some weird ligature nonsense to make that single emote look right instead of .... hurting an entire language's use.
