Current Hyperfixation: Wizard of Oz

I use outdated technology just for fun, listen to crappy music, and watch a lot of horror movies. Expect posts about These Things. I talk a lot.

Check tags like Star Trek Archive and Media Piracy to find things I share for others.

I saw Princess Mononoke tonight at a friend's movie night, somehow for the first time ever, so I'm about 27 years late to telling you that it's beautiful.

It has absolutely no ironic distance from even its strangest and silliest imagery, which I deeply appreciate. There's talking apes and pigs and googly-eyed forest spirits and they are all treated with not just seriousness but reverence.

And it's a movie about wanting to live. It's about environmentalism, that's not exactly subtle, but it's also about knowing that you'll never get your old life back, you'll never get your old world back, and deciding you still want to live in the new one. Not because the new world is better, because it might not be, or not for a long time. Not really even because you're needed for the rebuilding. It's about wanting to live for its own sake, because there's still a world and your heart still beats and that's all it goddamn takes to spend another day here. It's about living through an apocalypse and standing ankle-deep in the ashes and saying "I still want this."

Beautifully put.

The image your description brings to my mind: Watching a comic relief character's sword get bent aside with stone-faced sobriety during a pivotal character beat is just one of the film's many perfect juxtapositions of the absurd and the profound.
