was this a thing? was anime sold on DVD in CD-style jewel cases in Japan? Or is this some weird bootleg lmao
I use outdated technology just for fun, listen to crappy music, and watch a lot of horror movies. Expect posts about These Things. I talk a lot.
Check tags like Star Trek Archive and Media Piracy to find things I share for others.

Some of Pioneer's early anime DVD releases in the US did come in CD jewel case inside a cardboard longbox type thing that made them the size of a DVD case, if I recall correctly. This was super early in terms of DVD so maybe people hadn't quite figured out the norms yet. My guess is this is from that era!
It would be helpful if the eBay person posted a back cover photo too though, lol
Yeah lol. I would assume the disc in this case is the same 1999 disc that I found ISOs of online - the show split across 4 DVDs which are all surprisingly single-layer. Presumably dual layer was exorbitantly expensive at the time compared to single layer media haha.
This sort of episode count and split is VERY common for anime DVD releases of the era. 3-4 episodes a disc was kinda the norm, although later on we started sometimes getting 5 episode discs. I suspect there were some extra costs with going dual layer but I think the real reason was "we don't need to if we're only putting 3 or 4 episodes on the disc"
