Current Hyperfixation: Wizard of Oz

I use outdated technology just for fun, listen to crappy music, and watch a lot of horror movies. Expect posts about These Things. I talk a lot.

Check tags like Star Trek Archive and Media Piracy to find things I share for others.

If the latest Pixel or Galaxy phones came with microSD expansion I would buy them in a heartbeat. I can even deal with the 3.5mm exclusion. But microSD is a dealbreaker for me, man...

it's incredibly funny to me that microSD has fallen out of android flagships. That was a selling point, a huge talking point for. YEARS and then suddenly "oh uh" silence

it sucks a lot because it was one of the nicer flexibilities of the platform, even as onboard storage capacities got boosted, being able to put read-only or lower priority data or even just buy a particularly nice microSD card for your camera roll or whatever.

good luck with what i'm presuming is your hunt for a new phone!

I bought a new phone that should be perfectly adequate for me, the midrange Galaxy A52 5G, specifically because it still had a microSD slot... It's been sitting in a drawer for over a year as I'm consistently indecisive about actually switching to it from my LG G7. The G7 is still better in many ways. The screen is better, the capacitive fingerprint reader on the back of the phone remains the absolute best way to implement fingerprint, and the optical under-screen scanner on the A52 genuinely sucks (it will fail if the finger is held to the screen at an angle different to the one it was registered at). And yet, my G7 runs Android 9, and is really starting to show its age. The A52 5G just got updated to Android 13 this weekend. It's faster, with a better battery, but... I dunno.

It sucks that the modern phone market is just a wide selection of different compromises. There really is no "best phone" anymore.

Same vibe as when Samsung made ads lampooning Apple removing the headphone jack, and then after the Airpods became the best-selling wireless headphones of all time, they deleted all those ads and took the headphone jack off their next phone.
