what's the point of hot pot restaurants like why would i go to a place and pay someone else to make me cook the food myself

It's a communal activity. Everyone might make their own dipping sauce, but you're all putting stuff in the same hot pot, and as those ingredients cook, the broth slowly morphs into something unique to this particular group of people, what they wanted to eat on this particular outing. You're all reaching around and through each other's arms, trying to get the stuff you want in and out of the pot--it becomes something of an athletic event with enough people. You get to see the specific things other people like in a hot pot, and it's a great opportunity to try something new on a friend or acquaintance's recommendation. Oh yeah okay that makes sense; I don't ever think about activities for groups of friends because I don't have groups of friends lol
