Current Hyperfixation: Wizard of Oz

why do I still see posts about covid on my tl. It's not going anywhere. It's never going to go away. If the entire world masked up 24/7 for a year straight it would not go away. I don't want to diminish people who's lives have been deeply affected by this virus or those who have reasons to be much more concerned about catching it but like. I'm pretty sure it is beyond modern medical science to eradicate this disease ever. The very few diseases we have ever been able to (mostly) eradicate were only possible because of very specific traits that covid does not never did and never will have, it is like the flu crossed with the common cold it is here to stay and that is a fact of life that we are all going to have to live with and move forward with. I'm not being cynical or anything here I'm just like. This is reality. No amount of masking or vaccinating is ever going to get rid of this, why are some people still out there advocating for lockdown-era lifestyles like it's going to do absolutely anything other than make you extremely depressed and isolated

in reply to @pendell's post:

I think the post I saw recently was talking about the need for a more frequent update schedule for the vaccine, not for total lockdown.

And the rest of the article, while grim, made points about inaccessibility of Paxlovid due to medical hellscape and CDC lumping it with the flu virus, the shift in media rhetoric, and difficulty of finding consistent and accurate information

I don't think it's worth giving up, even if it is truly endemic, since there is still a lot that we're able to do to reduce infections and treat them that we presently aren't making available

no amount of masking or vaccinating is ever going to get rid of this

this part has still been rolling around in my head

Masking, for example, isn't going to rid us forever of the common cold or flu forever either. But it will protect people from getting sick, including immunocompromised people, elderly people, etc.

But it's still an important thing we should do, not only to mitigate risk to vulnerable populations, but to simply limit the spread of sickness and reduce everyone's suffering a little.

I wish more places had a culture of masking when you're sick, and that everyone just masked when they got on an airplane or bus.

to me "living with covid" is keeping an eye on case rates/wastewater data and wearing a mask in public when they get high, as well as focusing more on outdoor events than indoor ones.

i'm not particularly depressed or isolated and i haven't ever had a confirmed case of covid, though i do i suspect i caught it once early on. i'm not really trying to get rid of it, i just dont want to catch it!

i talk about covid like i talk about the weather. i can't stop the rain, but i'll still check the forecast and remind you to bring an umbrella

man this line of argumentation just seemed facile to me last fall when I could still stand up for any length of time, before some chick decided to go out to a conference and cough on everyone she saw and personally infect like 300 people, before the hotel decided we should rawdog unfiltered recycled air throughout the building, before a whole bunch of people similarly decided that literally any acknowledgement of or mitigation strategy for covid was lockdowns to them and therefore the only way I'd have any shot at retaining the use of my lungs was to be on personal lockdown forever, which i fucked up after only three years. Now, idk, may you live in the world you've wished for?

I caught covid in 2021 and was out of commission for two weeks. It was pretty bad.

I'd like to re-emphasize that I'm not arguing for any particular course of action, I am stating what I observe to be an unavoidable fact of reality and asking a genuine question as to why there are people still talking about covid as if it's something that can be wiped out

I don't want to diminish people who's lives have been deeply affected by this virus or those who have reasons to be much more concerned

it is like the flu crossed with the common cold

yea sure man

There is so much space between "We can't eradicate it forever, why do I still see posts about covid on my tl" and "everyone should be demanding China Covid 0 policies"

Free tests, free vaccines, accessible data about current infection numbers, masks required in medical settings were things that we had that the dems rolled back in the last 2½ years. Better ventilation systems would be a no downsides investment in public health. Mandate fuckin sick leave. But we will never get any of that because even "leftists" have picked up covid minimalizing talking points.

You don't need to be a global warming denialist to have harmful takes about climate change. You don't need to be an antivaxer to have harmful takes about an ongoing public health crisis
