immediately hit with an icy coldness of user hostility and "this is just a bad clone of twitter" when going to Mastodon or Bluesky. Because that's what they both are, proudly. How do you turn off the Mastodon notification sound it's very annoying.

Something to consider is that there's a bunch of software compatible with Mastodon, connected the same way. If you want a different interface, there are a lot of clones (not-Twitter, not-Instagram, etc.), but Akkoma does longer-form posts, and so forth. You might want to scan through the list at https://fediverse.party/en/miscellaneous/ to see if something sounds like a better fit, then use something like https://fediverse.observer/ (note the "Software: All" drop-down up top) to find a server that isn't falling apart.
Or not. I've been on Mastodon since almost the beginning, so "it's fine."
