Current Hyperfixation: Wizard of Oz

  • He/Him

I use outdated technology just for fun, listen to crappy music, and watch a lot of horror movies. Expect posts about These Things. I talk a lot.

Check tags like Star Trek Archive and Media Piracy to find things I share for others.

capitalism is fundamentally incompatible with actual infosec. it's great at faking it, at selling you a product that says it will solve all your security problems and which will just be another attack surface, but the core goal of increasing corporate profits will always be at odds with nearly every possible aspect of information security

run an adblocker for both personal security and ideological reasons. something like uBlock origin is going to be more effective at keeping horrible shit off your computer than actual malware scanners will, because tricking you into installing that shit yourself is the primary attack vector for it these days. it's just social engineering, but automated to use ad networks so it's much more efficient

It's probably the most impactful computer security thing you can do as a consumer.

More than that, these days it's a completely different way to experience the Internet, psychologically. I used to think banner ads and popups were bad, but we didn't have the bandwidth for autoplaying video back then...

It's like various kinds of scam advertisements are the only thing I see anymore. Even if it isn't trying to steal your passwords, it might be some pyramid scheme or some overpriced supplement pretending to cure covid. Feels like the whole of internet advertising is propped up by grifters.

edit: to be clear I wrote this before I noticed this was from a couple months ago. Still feels appropriate though.
