Current Hyperfixation: Wizard of Oz

I use outdated technology just for fun, listen to crappy music, and watch a lot of horror movies. Expect posts about These Things. I talk a lot.

Check tags like Star Trek Archive and Media Piracy to find things I share for others.

There are a ton of cartoons released in the past decade or so that I'd love to get blu-ray collections of, but they just aren't getting released anymore. Basically any show that isn't aimed towards adults is just significantly less likely to get a blu-ray release, let alone the decline of physical video media as a whole. Western cartoons just get the shorter end of an already-shortening stick because kids who the shows are made for are even less likely to buy a Blu-Ray than adults.

But it does represent a worrying trend of media companies exerting maximum power without fear of social reprisal. Since streaming lets a company have total control over when you're allowed to watch the things you've paid for, those rights holders are far less inclined to keep offering releases that don't let them exert this newfound power. And when they do, they're usually re-release, exceptionally safe bets, or indie releases that a 3rd party had to fight tooth and nail for to attain the rights.

Part of me hopes that now with stuff like mass takedowns of streaming shows and Netflix enforcing much-more draconian sharing policies that more people will start demanding physical media as a way to wrest back some degree of control. But I know that convenience is a genie you can't easily put back in the bottle, so I'm not holding my breath. Who knows? Maybe piracy represents consumers' last alternative for wresting control back for their media - we'll see, I guess.

It sucks so much :(

I'm at the point of aggressively archiving good copies of anything i'm even vaguely interested in because who knows if it'll be findable at all in the future. -_-
