Current Hyperfixation: Wizard of Oz

  • He/Him

I use outdated technology just for fun, listen to crappy music, and watch a lot of horror movies. Expect posts about These Things. I talk a lot.

Check tags like Star Trek Archive and Media Piracy to find things I share for others.

One of the things that constantly bugs me about the site is a lack of responsiveness. Now, I'm not saying "ugh the site is too SLOW make it FASTER everything should load in HALF A MILLISECOND" I fully understand this is a small operation that is doing its best to scale with the influx of users.

It's not the load times themselves that bother me, but rather that as the site is loading, there is no indication it is doing so. This is particularly noticeable on mobile. If I tap the rehost button because I want to add something, it might take me to the rehost screen instantly... Or it might take 30 seconds. Again, I'm fine if it takes 30 seconds, I totally understand, but about 5 seconds into that wait I'm 100% going to question myself on whether I actually tapped the rehost button or missed it. And then 5 seconds after that I'll wonder again. And then I'll be certain I've tapped it... But then begin to doubt myself again.

My point is the site needs some indicator of loading, processing, of just give us a quick second...

And while a standard loading bar or spinning circle would certainly full this purpose more than adequately... I think we can go harder than that.

Two words: Thinking Eggbug.

Just a lil' eggbug thinkin' real hard in the center of your screen as the page loads. Not only would this give me confirmation that I tapped the button correctly, it would fill me with delight every time I saw the lil' guy doin' his best. you go get 'em little fella!!! 30 seconds is too little to spend looking upon His Grace.

maybe it could even be a little animated. tappin his noggin, flutterin' around or somethin'... frantically shufflin' papers in a loop while text reads "Eggbug is organizing, one moment..."

I'm layin' down the ideas here, they're free, no compensation needed.

as someone who is most certainly not a communist, it sure says something about the current state of the tech industry that I trust the communists to run a better and healthier social media platform than anyone else.

I'm over here with my Ron Swanson ass looking at the playing field as objectively as I can hope to and saying "I'll go with the tankies, thank you very much."

Anonymous asked:
How open would you be to someone making a third party mobile app?
in general: very

we don't have a public facing API yet and we'd ask that anyone making a client hold off until there is one. we're going to allow third party clients, but the public API release will likely have a separate terms of use that we haven't written yet. our main priorities are maintaing site performance/integrity, and maintaining user privacy. any terms would exist to protect those.

also we obviously can't really help you if a fruit company gets mad about porn in the app.

I suggest anyone looking for an "app" experience just add the Cohost website to your home screen as a Chrome/Firefox/Safari shortcut.

It shows up on your home screen just like any app, and at least on Chrome for Android, it caches some important site data permanently so it loads faster and removes the URL bar for an app-like user experience (although you can still copy your current URL from the notification shade). Has been working great for me so far.

I understand the point of not making follower/following lists public on Cohost but I really would like it as at least an optional thing. You don't have to include Twitter's "this person is following you" messages or any of that, but the option to click on the list of who someone you respect is following to see if they follow any other cool people you might not have heard of can be really fun.
