Got home, chilled out for a bit, went to turn on my PC only to find it's suddenly no longer outputting video from any output. Computer seems to be turning on, my mouse and keyboard act like they're connected, the motherboard gives it's usual happy bleep, but no video? I've tried the DP cable, and the HDMI outputs on both the video card and the motherboard.

Computer Over??? Help??

connecting to my shitty TCL TV over HDMI works just fine. So it's either the DisplayPort cable... or the monitor is fucked.

I hope the monitor isn't fucked because I paid a dude $120 for it and I've only had it for like 2 months and it's my first 4K monitor that I've been greatly enjoying the benefits of πŸ™ƒπŸ™ƒπŸ™ƒ

Connecting the same HDMI cord to the monitor, poof, monitor works! At least, the HDMI port works? It even runs at 4K resolution - but it's capped at 24Hz, which is obviously not ideal.

So now it's one of three things: bad DisplayPort cable, bad DP port on the video card, or bad DP port on the monitor.

I guess I'm making a surprise trip to Walmart to grab a DisplayPort cable, yippee...

Got back from Walmart. Spent $22.44 on 2 new cables.

Neither worked.

When connecting and disconnecting the HDMI cable while the machine was running, I heard the distinct windows dings of devices being inserted and removed (da-dum, da-doom), but that sound does not play when connecting any of my DP cables, nor does the monitor show up under the list of devices.

So it is now down to either the video card or the monitor acting up and refusing to play ball. I wish I had another DP device or display to test this with. Only one I can think of is my laptop with a mini-DP out, but I'm not gonna buy another adapter/cable just to test that... I think.

This is fucking great. Not exactly how I planned on spending my evening. What's my choice now. I guess run my monitor over HDMI in either 4K@24Hz or 1080p@60Hz. That's nice. Buy a 4K monitor just to use it at 1080p because gestures vaguely SOMETHING broke...

Gonna try reseating the video card, idk. It's a GTX 760, maybe it got angry at me running a 4K video output on it and cooked its DP port, who fucking knows.

After sitting in defeat for several minutes I resorted to searching Reddit for similar issues. First result is someone with the exact same problem in every way. Top comment:

oh yeah just unplug the monitor and PC from the wall for a few minutes then plug everything back in. DisplayPort is just like that sometimes.

no. there's no fucking way.

Unplug everything for about 5 minutes. Plug it back in.

Works like nothing ever happened.

I only want to throw computer out of the window a little bit. I would return the 2 cables I bought but they were already open-box clearance items and I honestly should have more than one DP cable knocking around anyways, so... it wasn't completely fruitless? I'm tired.
