These are both red-backed salamanders, though they may not look it! The second is what people call the “lead-backed phase”—the same species as the former, but with different coloration and behavior. Their skin has a beautifully metallic cast, and the lead-backed in particular with its pearlescent spots looks like the night sky in miniature. Their underbelly is a mottled gray resembling television static or soap suds, but good luck seeing it—they flip around in energetic s-curves when touched!
