Discovered in 2010 at hydrothermal vents at the East Scotia ridge near Antarctica, this yeti crab gets its common name from David Hasselhoff due to its 'hairy' chest! Like other yeti crabs, these 'hairs' are used to farm bacteria that the species then harvests and eats! Furthermore, the Kiwa genus are not true crabs, and are in fact squat lobsters! This is the only yeti crab known to live in the Southern Ocean.

The binomial name 'Kiwa tyleri' wasn't given to this species until 2015, and was named after the lead researcher who discovered it - Paul Tyler. Current research into this species is ongoing, as there is theoretically a link between the hypoxic nature of the habitat and an organ known as a scaphognathite; responsible for passing water over the gills which therefore allows for oxygen to be taken in. Comparisons between crustaceans that live in hypoxic enviroments and those that live in high oxygen environments seem to support this.
