Finished replaying gone home yesterday. The whole "looking through every trash can in your family's home trying to figure our what's going on at 2 in the morning" thing makes a lot of sense when you consider that Katie just got back from the Netherlands and is presumably jetlagged as hell.

Minor Gone Home spoilers but this bit of parallelism is my favorite move the game makes--using ephemera to invoke 90s nostalgia in the first act and then dunking you in cold water with the era's cruelties in the last.

The quiet turn to religion as the Greenbriars' marriage hits the skids is so well-observed--the "rekindling the fire" books written by some-reverend-or-other, the counseling retreat communicated to friends as an anniversary trip--and it's such a strength of the structure of the game that you can simultaneously cheer1 that this does seem to be helping them knit things back together and be distressed by the fact that this is quite possibly the single worst time this could be happening for Sam.

  1. or be saddened that she didn't cheat on him with ranger rick. i think she should have been allowed. "rick had a serious girlfriend" immaterial.
