Northern flickers, having tired of slamming their heads repeatedly into various trees, elect to slam their heads straight into the ground (a different kind of house that grubs live in)

Looks—and sounds!—like one of our summer-resident ospreys has returned for another season, chirping out a call that I believe in context to mean “big loud mammals fuck off.”

Loons on the Lake this morning! Champlain is typically too busy of a lake for loons to raise their young on, but they’ll stop by on their way to smaller, quieter lakes.
