Of the 3 trainers receiving their starters from Professor Acacia's lab, Culric is the "ego" of the group, sensitive and down-to-earth. While interested in completing the gym challenge and training his pokemon to become stronger, he is more concerned with their well-being and happiness, and wants to dedicate his life to helping pokemon rather than battling full-time.

The oldest of the trainer trio, Mendel considers themselves the most mature, but that is not necessarily always the case. More quiet and reserved than their peers, they try to take a logical and analytical approach to everything, even when this leads to them missing the obvious. Like Culric, Mendel is less interested in battling than Ferrous, and they mainly took on the role of "dexholder" to help Prof. Acacia gather data on the native fauna of the region.

The youngest of the three trainers to receive their starter, Ferrous is bold, brash, and appropriately hot-blooded for a trainer who favors fire types. She is very impulsive and tends to act before thinking, often leaving her friends to reign her in and pick up the pieces. Like most kids in the Pokemon World, she dreams of becoming a "Pokemon Master", but may need to learn some humility and maturity along the way first.
