this is one of those things where I can't tell what is an actual global change and what's just a change in my immediate surroundings, and I suspect it's largely the latter

but it seems like these days I encounter a lot fewer furries who identify with Power Animals like wolves and lions

and a lot more Trash Animals like raccoons and rats

and not to put a big value judgement either way, I mean we're all cringe here and "your species is so uncool" is an opinion for fifth graders, I just think it's an interesting shift

in reply to @pervocracy's post:

probably reflects at least some part of the "return to the woods & be a gremlin" vibes we got going

sometimes you just wanna be a lil guy whose biggest concerns are yelling & trying to remember where you stashed that one peanut, yknow

I find these zeitgeist shifts super interesting! Possibly unrelated or possibly more related than it seems at first glance example: I work in adult and I've noticed a big shift where now roommate scenes are way more common (because nobody can afford to live alone anymore)

that's interesting, i wonder if it has anything to do with being inundated with pictures of little trash creatures on a daily basis??? i see a lot more photos of Trash Animals on the regular in 2023 than i did in 2003. maybe people just have a higher probability of seeing a picture of a rat with a whole piece of pizza and going "yeah... me"

that and being a Survivor Creature that lives on scraps is relatable as a millennial/gen z trying to not die
