oh my god Portuguese airport security is so goddamn normal compared to the US

they X-ray your bag and make you go through a metal detector

they don't micromanage shoes and electronics and genitals and there aren't 20 blue-shirt fake-cops screaming at you the whole time and dogs sniffing you and a video fake-cop on a loop and every third bag getting pulled for improperly coiled phone chargers or something and a 90-year-old having their wheelchair swabbed for explosives and

I get so much airport anxiety from the whole circus so it's such a blessing (and makes me feel not at all less safe) to be in a place where they're not like that

I hate modern air travel and it drives me mad because I used to love it so much before it became completely miserable.

At least I don't travel much for Magic anymore. That always sucked because it turns out a densely-packed box of cards is just a big opaque block on the x-ray scanner and that meant getting the special attention every time. (And as of this year, my passport, residency card, and gender expression all match again finally so that helps.)

But yeah, sympathy for the anxiety, and agreement that intra-EU stuff is noticeably less obnoxious.

20 blue-shirt fake-cops screaming at you the whole time

being hard of hearing and visibly trans in USian airports is always very relaxing, I cherish my hours spent in the security line struggling to hear rapid instructions barked by people who are never looking in my direction when they speak to me

Last time I went into canada

Border Security: You have any firearms or drugs in your bags?
Guy Behind me, nervously: Uhhh.... noo......
German Shepherd: *freaking the fuck out over this guy's bag*
Border Security: Come on, man. You sure there's no weed in there?
