I know I could never be a parent because the 2-ish kid across the way from me in the airport waiting lounge is doing this thing where every time his mom gives him a toy he hurls it across the room with great force, but if she leaves him empty-handed he screams louder and louder until he gets one

she's had to walk across and pick up toys like... 30 times now? also her phone and his shoes. every time she gets sick of doing it and withholds throwable objects we discover that there is no maximum to the scream volume

she's being remarkably patient, possibly because the entire room is watching, possibly because any negative reaction would put us into a whole new world of scream

and I just don't know what you do in this situation other than play fetch forever, there is no "let's talk about better ways to have fun" with a kid this age and this level of tired, there's just reminding yourself this stage usually only lasts... several years

my first thought is to figure out a way to just attach one or more toys to the child, like on a long string or something, so that even when the kid throws them, you can just sit there and wind them back. but that's uhhh definitely not something that's reasonable to expect an exhausted traveling parent to be able to macgyver together. not to mention i have no idea if it could cause even more new, unforeseen problems...
