when did it catch on for sites to start putting hateful comments behind a little "click here to see the hate" instead of making them go the fuck entirely away? that just draws attention to it. oh here's a long thread of comments that look the same... with one line that stands out in a different color with an offer to see a special sort of comment.

this very observably does not discourage haters from coming back to leave more special comments on post after post, nor does it stop people from responding and derailing the whole conversation onto a topic of the hater's choosing.

putting little decorations on hate speech is not site moderation. site moderation is making a fucking decision sometimes.

You must log in to comment.

in reply to @pervocracy's post:

This is why i like subscriber-only comment sections (404 media, aftermath, etc). Means that the commenters will self-select to be people who align with the platform, and makes breaking the rules more painful.

It's like, "We don't agree with this, but we think it's important to include it in the conversation because everybody has something important to contribute" and it's just a slur 5 times.

don't miss the double reverse twitter version of this where you scroll past the most vitriolic hatred you've ever seen in your life to get to a "Some tweets that may contain hateful comments have been hidden. Click to view" gate and it's just "fuck transphobes"
