do classical musicians get salty about their orchestras doing novelty bits like video game themes because it's annoying when it gets a bigger audience response than the Great Works

or do they just think it's kinda fun

or is this a hot controversy within the community

this feels like a controversy, I haven't checked any musician boards but I've derived from first principles that this must be a controversy that has ended friendships

in reply to @pervocracy's post:

my impression (source: dated violinist) is that the orchestra is by & large cool with it? but the orchestra patrons, the people who have their names in the program, lose their fucking shit.

I think Tar is much more of an outlier; most musicians at a professional level understand that "important" or not, music is a melodramatic form and that whatever stirs the audience best is the best performance to do, and try to attract an audience. Having fun isn't "beneath them".

there's definitely some argument about it, but a lot of people are aware that the film/game/pop concerts are what pay the bills for everything else, so they let it happen even if it's not their personal thing. also that music tends to be easier to play, so the orchestral musicians generally aren't complaining

I'm friends with some people who perform classical music professionally. When I've asked them about this, they say that they enjoy:

  • playing music
  • having the audience connect to the music
  • making rent

Novelty concerts are therefore good - they sell a bunch of tickets and the audience enjoys the music.

Patrons flip their lids over this, because it's not ~~real~~ classical music, and then turn around and ask why the Youths are not interested in classical music. lol

This makes sense and now I'm thinking about my experience in the film industry, which is that nobody outside the top 0.1% cares if they're working on commercials or reality shows vs. Real Cinema, because being able to make any kind of living in art means you're winning
