I need more art books with bad examples, because way too many are like "the elements of composition are LINE, FORM, and COLOR" and thank you but every photo and painting I have ever created has had lines, forms, and colors. I do not believe this means I am already perfect and have nothing to learn.

I realize in practical terms it's a little hard to show bad examples, because you don't want to embarrass someone so you have to go to the trouble of making shitty artwork from scratch just to explain why it's shitty, but I would actually love an art teacher who did that

It maybe wouldn't even need to be fake shitty art but maybe a teacher that shows old work from when they were still learning and what they would do differently now with more experience. You see that a lot in crafting "check out this first thing I ever knit/crocheted/sewed etc. It's not bad for a first attempt, but it has x mistake or took long because I didn't understand y. Here's what I do differently now to avoid x mistake and/or to save time"

this is not the thing you’re asking for, and you didn’t solicit advice so please just ignore me if this is unwelcome, but: are you familiar with Christopher Alexander? His “fifteen properties”, which are supposed to be for architecture/space but are surprisingly applicable across creative endeavors, did massively good work for me in terms of helping me look at a thing I made and go “oh, it could do with more X”. He also has examples of what it means for each of those to be out of whack, which can really help train the eye to look at a thing that’s Off and figure out what isn’t working.

Awesome! I’m unfortunately struggling to find a thing online that excerpts his $70 volume-1 where he gives examples and counter-examples in pictures.

This is succinct, but doesn’t include the original illustrations (and paraphrases rather than quotes): https://camillovisini.com/writing/fifteen-fundamental-properties

I’ll try to extract the pictures from my copy tonight and make a post, bc I love it - if it’s of interest I’d be happy to tag you!
