AI are not stealing things. AI are not sentient, they don't do anything a person isn't telling them to do.

AI artwork isn't stealing things. it is just the product of what people have told the AI to make.

HOWEVER

AI artwork is the RESULT of datasets full of stolen artwork. artwork that was scraped, taken, and used without permission by PEOPLE.

that's what we're mad about.

all this shit about how the ai works and what it generates not being a collage but a new iterative trained process blah blah i don't CARE

i care about deviantart nearly auto-tagging ALL of the artwork that any deviantart user had EVER posted as totally cool and fine for AI dataset scrapers to take.

i care about "what style is this in?" twitter replies that were baffling artists for a while until they realised that the replies were from people scraping and tagging their art.

i care about the people who are hurting artists and blatantly violating their IP and copyright to use their work in a way they did not expect, want, or allow.

i've done a bit of looking into copyright law as, yknow, an ARTIST, and it is actually (in the USA) pretty restrictive by default. you have to explicitly give permission and license (not copyright ownership, LICENSE/allowing to use a copyrighted work) for EVERY SINGLE variation on use. a license to use the art for 2 years is different from the license to use it for 5 years or an unlimited amount of time. a license to use the art in america is different from the license to use it in america and canada, or worldwide.

and these ai "artists" truly do not give one single shit about it.

i think in the conversation about AI art, maybe the fact that the majority of human artists think it's stealing should be taken into account. just as much as IF NOT MORE THAN that of the AI programmers who are trying to mimic those human artists. maybe we're the experts here, actually.
