Nona the Ninth discussion
These books give me whiplash because Tasmyn Muir is really good at writing characters, but ultimately she seems more concerned with Plot and Lore and at some point those take over and it gets super confusing and boring. Then I go to some online forum and am eventually able to reconstruct what happened from like 7 different threads and it's like "oh okay that's neat" but it's not nearly as satisfying as getting that information from the book itself when I am enmeshed in the narrative.
Maybe this is old-fashioned of me, because the books seem at least partly designed to be theorized over by online communities, which I'm sure is a non-trivial aspect of their popularity. But it is so unsatisfying as a reader to be left out of the loop if I didn't happen to remember some minute lore detail from the previous book that I read over 2 years ago!
Is there a term for this friction between character and plot? Narranarrative dissonance?
