Over the Moebius Skies

Fond of yuri and giant robots. Char Aznable's Pet Eevee, for better or for worse. Probably for worse.

I've been wanting to do a little writeup on this for a while but now that talk about Gay Mecha is in Vogue thanks to Bravern, I feel a little more motivated to do it.

So, The Witch From Mercury is very obviously yuri, right. There are two female characters who meet and form a relationship throughout the show, they are engaged by the end of the first episode, and married in the last one. Like, this is just canonically yuri.

Yuri, however, is not the main point of The Witch From Mercury, which I think can be offputting to some people who come in expecting it to be. It's not a romance anime. It's a science fiction mecha anime with romance in it. Obviously the yuri relationship has a heavy focus, and is a major part of the show, but it's not focused on the way it would be in a more "traditional" yuri work. There are no aquarium dates, or any real dates period. (There is a "But We're Both Girls", though!)

I'm not saying this as a negative or positive thing. Certainly people have preferences on if they want the yuri itself as the main course or side dish when they are watching or reading something, and people who want it as the main course might be disappointed in this case. But it's not really inherently good or bad.

As for me, I thought it was a sweet romance that I was very invested in by the end of the show. It was good yuri. It was also a very good show all around that I'd probably be recommending to people even if the yuri wasn't there. You should watch The Witch From Mercury, if you haven't.
