i'm not a true audiophile (maybe i'm an audiophilistine?) but having had the chance to give the index and its audio a good solid try lately i can say i'm supremely unimpressed

it might also be in part because of how much and how often i've heard that the index has audio that's the best thing since the invention of sex, but the whole concept of open-back headphones for vr seems wrong from the get-go

don't get me wrong, the audio sounds pretty good!

but i can also hear all my fans and base stations whirring with the index, which i cannot with closed-back headphones/other headsets, and i kinda want to be avoiding outside sounds when in vr?

it also has trouble making bass, i'm sure the frequency response being flat as it is means it's more accurate but that doesn't mean too much to me when the drivers just do not have the ability to power the sound into the snail that makes me hear

all in all, the audio is good and if you have an index you can expect good audio, but not to have full immersion and i would like for people to stop playing it up as the greatest thing

the microphone on the index is hands down amazing though compared to other headsets, gotta give it that

Gotta disagree. Of the things about the Index I love (it's eye relief at minimum works really well with my glasses, the headset holds my glasses REALLY well, FOV and rez and IPD are a massive upgrade over my Rift S), the sound being directly blasted Into your ears really helps the feel. The Rift S, I could have used headphones or earbuds, but sorting them out felt like a faff, on top of the already faffy process of VR. I mean, yeah, outside sounds leak, a LOT, and I do hear the base stations whrr. But the sounds are so brilliantly yeeted into my ears, I love 'em

i imagine the point of comparison is important, if you're coming from a rift s with it's even worse solution then yeah the index is a great improvement! but with the various vives i've been using there's closed back headphones that just pop down onto the ear and there isn't that sound leak. the sound is good and the lack of sound is good.

also if you haven't already considered them i super recommend vroptician or the like for prescription lens inserts, will work better than glasses in the headset and will protect it and your glasses from getting scratched
