a year of art in review, one of two posts. this one will be my own drawings, one each month. here's a post with memes and drawovers.

i started out the year with an eye surgery, and 2023 admittedly was not my year |3 something reflected in the lack of much art that made it past initial sketching to more refinement. also a month where i did only one meme. followed by a month on the road where i nearly did the same, august to october was the era of boykissers.

also notable is that i spent more time at the start of the year on 3d work, mostly avatars for vrchat

in total i don't feel like my skills have really improved as much from 2022 -> 2023 as they did from 2021 -> 2022. on the one hand i'd really like to be able to do more, better, but on the other i'm still quite happy with drawing daily, and having the occasional burst that moves me forward. but i'll keep at it, and hopefully y'all enjoy the journey with me :3

here's links to cohost and twitter threads of past years in review:

January

a picture showing an outside screening of a movie with a projector, pinball is macro sitting in the back casting a shadow with his hand on the screen, multiple silhouettes of smaller persons watching are in a crowd watching his shenenigans, with one turned back to look at him

the rest under the fold!

February

a close up shot from pinball's chest fur showing him looking down at a micro standing on his fur, ears perked

March

scoop, a white mouse with brown hair, as a macro mid-stomp through a skyline. the background is dominated by pinball's paws at various extreme depths as indicated by intense blur and atmospheric haze

April

wide shot of a tablet pen with solar panels like a satellite is in orbit over the earth, pinball below on earth macro walking across it reaching up for the pen

May

very close in view from under pinball's heel as his paw is about to touch down, a small city in the distance under his ballpad with search lights aiming up at his paw and only one powerful enough to pierce through the fog of heat under his paw to reach the ballpad

June

sketch of pinball holding up two micros to his chest in his fists while smirking, one with a vague canine shape and one with a vague rodent shape

July

simplified sketch of a very fluffy theriomorphic xipher fox

August

low angle pov sketch under a macro wolf hank lifting his right paw over the viewer, splaying his toes to show a webbing between them that goes from the base to only about halfway up each digit

September

i only drew boykissers, literally nothing else this month
drawover of the "you like kissing boys" meme with blaise

October

pinball curled up sleeping on top of an rv, one fore and hind paw dangling off the edge and his tail curled around the hitch end

November

colored sketch pov from inside a sock of jevin in the foreground wearing a red robe and a backpack with a walking stick looking out over an expanse of fibers that extend to the horizon and curve up to pinball's toe entirely replacing the sky

December

extreme low angle sketch showing a micro laying on their side in a steamy toe print on a hardwood floor, some sweat on them as pinball walks away, one paw in the background blurred with distance stepping down while one in clear focus in the midground shines in the light

These are all a lot of fun to look through! I hope this next year is smoother for you, especially art wise. Improvement is not always linear, and sometimes comes in forms like speed or other attributes.

You've done wonderfully this year, though, and you even got to experiment with perspectives you haven't done as much in the past. There is definitely improvement here in the breadth of your comfort zone and general artistry, and I'm looking forward to seeing where you'll go in 2024!

that so much of what i make is reaction to or reflection of friends around me does put a lot of memories into it, part of why i picked some and not others in some months :3

and for sure, i stay mindful of progress with art often following a cycle of highs and lows, and even if i'm in a low i know i'll work my way out of it

thank you much dot wott, hope you'll enjoy 2024 cat art as much as i'll enjoy making it :3
