I really like this little bit I added to the Bossgame credits - I hope people who enjoy the game might be inspired to check out some of the other things on the list! Some of them are obviously very well-known, while others are a little more niche.

When I was a kid, in the liner notes of Rise Against's "The Sufferer and The Witness", they listed other media that inspired the album - at least, I believe it was the Sufferer and The Witness, but it could have been Siren Song of the Counter-Culture. I lost the jewel cases ages ago, I think my sister stole them. Anyway.

This list included Bad Religion (another favorite of mine already) and Saul Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals", which I checked out from the library and read the next day in the bath, and all of this probably contributed to my growing love of punk rock, as well as my growing distrust of established Americana narratives.

ALL THIS IS TO SAY, I think openly listing your inspirations can be pretty cool! Maybe you nudge someone to check out something else that you love.

i'm trying to keep track of various major inspirations for Library Game so far, and it is... already quite a big and weird list

including an explicit reading list of inspirational material is awesome and imo does a lot to combat the underlying assumption a lot of pop culture still perpetuates that "originality" is some virtue aspiring creatives should still try to seriously pursue. like anything we create exists in a vaccum entirely void of context & there isn't an inherent element of originality in how we artistically express a conceptual collage of ideas based in the media we're inspired by in the first place. i remember lcd soundsystem's "losing my edge" had a very similar effect on my creative process lol. it's cool & i wish more people did it.

Yea!! I totally agree. I think people can get nervous listing their influences, too - inviting comparisons to the original - but so much of what's fun in creation is taking the things that have inspired us and remixing them into something totally new! No shame in that :D I definitely want to include these lists in games I make in the future, too.
