Dynamical mean field theory is one of those bits of physics that's really easy to understand on the surface—it's a bit like Hartree–Fock theory, but with an Anderson impurity model and also way different—but as soon as you dive into the real meat and potatoes of it, it's just completely overwhelming. I think DMFT is in one of those positions where it's just researched enough to be put into ab initio software, like Quantum ESPRESSO and VASP, but not quite well enough to be explained pedagogically outside of maybe 3 core texts—I'm racking my brain trying to understand this stuff.
