PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Félix Hernández, who was born and raised in Valencia, Venezuela, signed his first contract with the Seattle Mariners organization in 2002, and made his first Major League start for the M's on August 4, 2005, against the Tigers at Detroit's Comerica Park; and
WHEREAS, in 15 years in the Major Leagues, all with the Mariners, Félix compiled a 169-136 record in 419 games, was selected to the American League All-Star team six times, and twice led the AL in earned run average, in 2010 and 2014; and
WHEREAS, in 2010, Félix won the AL Cy Young Award, presented annually to the league's best pitcher, also finishing as runner-up for the award in both 2009 and 2014; and
WHEREAS, on August 15, 2012, Félix became the only Mariners pitcher to complete a perfect game, retiring all 27 Tampa Bay Rays batters in a 1-0 victory; and
WHEREAS, Félix, known to Mariners fans as "King Félix" since his minor league days, will be inducted into the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame before the team's Saturday, August 12, 2023 game against the Baltimore Orioles, as part of a weekend of festivities honoring this franchise legend.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Dow Constantine, King County Executive, do hereby proclaim that on Saturday, August 12, 2023, King County will be known for the day as
King Félix County
I encourage all residents to join me in congratulating Félix Hernández as he joins the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame.
