I never understood why this cartoon took off as a meme when it did, to the extent it did, but it's always been one of my favorites.
it's so strange. it's a sixty year old (maybe more I didn't check) chuck jones banger. it probably played on a dozen TV channels a hundred times or more. it was top tier when new, and 30 years later, and 20 years after that. what made Online suddenly discover it when they did? why did nobody notice in the intervening time that it was stupefyingly funny?
Chuck Jones had some absolutely incredible one-shot cartoons, and this might not even be the best of them. I want the internet to discover High Note or Now Hear This the way they did Dover Boys.
a funny thing about the cartoon is that it's a parody of a children's adventure book series but that series has faded into obscurity while the parody is well known
and i have seen multiple people online say "huh maybe I should read the books this is parodying" only to come back saying "these books are absolutely dreadful, complete disasters on every possible level"
i feel like that just adds to the charm. taking something miserable and hamming it up to the nth degree is where beauty is found i think
