First patch notes of the public cohost era! As we keep saying, we’ve been blown away by the response to cohost so far. We shipped a Lot of fixes in the last week and are in progress on new Features and other exciting things!

new things

  • if you’re not activated, you can see your place in line! check your settings page!
    • if you’re activated, this card won’t appear, because you’re already activated so there’s nothing to show there.
  • USER AND TAG SEARCH
    • we’re going to be adding full-text search for posts Soon, but there’s more complexity there so it’s not time yet.
  • changed our Terms of Use to remove an unnecessary rule against “using a fictional name or alias” after user feedback.
  • added a persistent link to the bug tracker in the right sidebar.
    • reading this in the cohost corner? look up!

post-launch fixes

  • redid the UI on the login page to avoid a combination of behaviors that made it seem like the login page was completely broken in firefox.
  • underage users are no longer unable to create pages.
  • feeds no longer fail to load if someone you follow shares a thread with contributions from two or more pages you blocked.
  • underage users posting adult content are now correctly allowed to view their own posts.
  • completely changed how our deploys work and how the site is hosted.
    • we did this multiple times to try and keep up with load. it’s going well! hopefully we can stop fucking with it soon!
  • fixed a bug where we were calculating scale for custom emoji once per instance instead of once per page
    • this caused a serious performance hit in some browsers! thanks @ticky for helping us find it!
  • when you set a profile URL that starts with www., it no longer gets removed by our URL normalizer.
  • fixed a bug where the cohost Plus! promo image had the wrong price on it.
    • the bug is that we forgot it’s $5 and not $4.99 when we were making the image. whoops!
  • changed the post editor to provide more feedback about the image upload process.
    • previously, you would only see “uploading”, which could mean four different things, which made figuring out bug reports near impossible! now it can say several things that give us a better idea of where the process is hanging.
  • fixed a bug where custom emoji wouldn’t show in the comment emoji picker.
  • fixed a bug where posts could appear multiple times in your dash if they were edited while you had the page open.
    • internally referred to as the “infinite liz bug”.
  • fixed some bugs with email verification.
  • entered the Second Age Of Posting.
    • every time we encounter an issue with our permissive approach to hypertext that we need to fix, we strive to only restrict it on posts going forward; previous posts will render unchanged.
    • you can’t use position: fixed now, that’s the only change in the Second Age.
  • fixed the community guidelines link in the report dialog going to the wrong place.
  • fixed an issue where writing unparseable HTML or CSS in a post would break every page on which it appeared.

pre-launch fixes

  • fixed an issue where the modal post composer would rapidly close and open when you tried to close it.
  • added a tooltip telling you how to actually save tags. we’re going to make changes down the road so that a pending tag will autosave, but there’s complexities here so we haven’t yet.
  • fixed an issue where your login session wouldn’t clear out all the way when you logged out.
  • fixed a few bugs around post summary generation.
  • fixed a bug where you couldn’t remove your pronouns.

coming soon to cohost

  • more bug fixes
  • alt text for attachments
    • there’s UX questions that we want aidan to be back in the office (she’s on vacation) before we try to solve, but jae’s getting everything that isn’t the finished UI in place beforehand, so that it’ll be almost ready to ship by the time she’s back.
  • allowing for gifs to be paused by default
    • this is another heavily requested accessibility feature that’s complex to implement but we think we have a way to do it.
  • even more!
    • we’re already working on some of the usability issues around editing tags and content warnings on firefox for android.
    • now that the launch week fires are mostly under control we can put more effort into shipping new things instead of just keeping the site online.

that's all for this week! thanks, as always, for using cohost! :eggbug:

"allowing for gifs to be paused by default"

i know that this is a request that's work-to-benefit ratio is abysmal but could be there a way for posts to set a CW-esque thing that, when dismissed, will autostart the GIFs still, independent of the user's settings? would quite improve CSS fuckery such as warioware, which heavily depends on GIFs starting at the right time.

right now, the number of unactivated users is about 13,000; we activated 150 today and we hope to increase that rate fairly regularly as we get a feeling for how much moderation work we need to do

underage users posting adult content are now correctly allowed to view their own posts.

should underage users be able to post adult content? feels weird that youre able to post something you wouldnt usually be allowed to see, and the only people who can see it are people who are older than you

im curious how you'll figure out gif pausing without forcing them into a webm like twitter does or whatever, we tried to get pausable gifs happening for sock chat but really struggled with that one
