okay, i have:

  • a windows 11 pc (i really wanna downgrade back to 10 but also this issue was on 10)
  • an xbox one controller (this issue also happened with a 360 controller
  • an xbox wireless adapter for windows 10

every so often, windows will just… lose track of the controller. it doesn't show up in the device manager and all games lose it. disconnecting and reconnecting the adapter doesn't help. rebooting the controller doesn't help.

does anyone know how to approach this or troubleshoot this? from what i can tell, no one's had the same problem as me.

edit: i ended up solving it by connecting my controller to my computer directly via bluetooth, thus introducing a new problem (stick drift in FFXIV), and then solving that new problem by reading an over-two-year-old reddit post and disabling the MDARE.
