  1. mpv can display subtitles even in --no-video mode, by writing them to the console above the status line

like the main reason i doubt it is

  1. none of apple’s desktop playback tools seem to support subtitles with no video
  2. if you are building that from scratch it is probably easier to start from a text file and add timing data than it is to go from timed text to understanding where to put stanza breaks etc
