Modern racing simulators are the most intricate forms of video games you can buy these days. Stand aside Fromsoft, because complexity and depth is the name of the game for racing sims. Or, at least, that's what they want you to think.
While it's true that racing sims are capable of simulating a vast library of physics calculations beyond the scope of possibility imagined by racing game devs of yesteryear, do we really gain much from the rush towards a perfect representation of real life racing?
I'm inclined to say "fuck no," and the current state of racing games is why.
as an esports driver I guarantee you that any of these current "racing sims" just play like shitty arcade games at high level. it's been especially transparent since the "covid boom" of simracing.
every single racing sim now is this sort of constant minigame of having to baby the car corner by corner, driving as robotically as possible to get the maximum out of the busted driving physics and game systems. all the while the devs and publishers dick around with esports (while having no infrastructure or knowledge to do this) and extremely short term profit/investments because that covid bubble could blow at any point. it's depressing.

It doesn't have great progression, but I really like playing it.
Also I fully support the full rebirth of the "arcade" racer. Imagine a modern-scale take on R4.
