So I actually have a really, REALLY long draft about this little guy. Talking about how I found it, realizing what it is and what it can do, and the common market for it. But I think a much shorter post will be sufficient.
Shoutouts to Kulza who was using the previous model years ago at BLFC and I'm an idiot for taking this long to try it myself.
Basically, this is a Mobius M1S. It's a drop in replacement upgrade of the old Mobius M1 camera which is 10 years old at this point. I do mean drop in, it still uses micro USB, I believe it uses the same standard of interchangable sensor inside, same light locations and everything. It's so old there's a Techmoan review, back when he reviewed dashcams. This actually covers MOST of what you'd want to know about the thing.
But this version is from 2022. So what's updated? Well, it does 1440p60/1080p60/720p120 now. It can encode in h264 or h265. The settings app has a LOT more knobs to twiddle for picture settings. The settings program is the exact same one in the techmoan video above, just updated to have some more tabs. It can still do text only config as well. It will still even do composite out via a weird USB breakout cable if you'd really like.
The downsides? Well it has a neat little rubberized coating that grinds off in the holder and makes a minor mess in the process. It only gets about 90 minutes of recording roughly (tested at 1080p60 h264 32mbit) on it's internal battery, which isn't bad but not great if you want hours of nose cam footage. Low light performance isn't amazing, this chost was recorded with it at default settings in a reasonably lit room, this one was the same but with exposure set from 16 to 28 (out of 32) in settings. Mic is mono and only records to one channel right now, maybe a FW change in the future for that.
And watching nose cam footage for a half hour is enough to give me motion sickness. Oofmsie. But, it's very good to see who took that picture of you so you can try and message them and ask for it! They're like 70-80 bucks on ebay or amazon and you can get the 90ish FOV like the one I've been showing here, or a 130ish FOV model that I also have but ended up not using. Not bad at all if you want a POV camera. Wish I could hide mine better in my suit.
I'll eventually upload some clips from it when I've recovered from motion sickness.
