So if I have a disk attached to a computer, running an operating system, and the disk mounted within the OS...
... and I suspend the system to ram,
and then I REMOVE the disk, take it to another computer, and modify the filesystem...
... and then re-attach it to the first system, and wake it back up
What happens?
it depends on how much of the stuff you modified was in disk caches when you suspended the first machine. best case, your changes would go unnoticed; worst case, some file system management structure is dirty, in cache, and when the cache flushes itself after you reinstall the drive it clobbers whatever changes you made, leaving the file system in an inconsistent state.
I also imagine it depends on what filesystem is being used.
I think I did this once and in fact clobbered stuff but I'm sure there's some mystic out there that knows EXACTLY what happens based on what filesystem is in place and what OS is touching it.
