I occasionally write long posts but you should assume I'm talking out of my ass until proved otherwise. I do like writing shit sometimes.

50/50 chance of suit pictures end up here or on the Art Directory account. Good luck.

I tag all of my posts complaining about stuff #complaining, feel free to muffle that if you'd like a more positive cohost experience.

The main reason doing all this adblocking on desktop seems so weird to me is I'm sure they get the bulk of their traffic from mobile (see also: smart tvs, just generally any shitty locked down OS device), and I'd bet that traffic is more valuable in the sense of how much data they can hawk from it. I'd love to see the numbers on all of that but it does seem very odd.

As others have pointed out, it's basically impossible to operate youtube as it is now (, without heaps of DRM) and ads not be able to be bypassed. There's literally like 4 or 5 entirely different ways to go about it currently, from in browser plugins and userscripts to a desktop app that basically replaces the entire site and shuffles out all the bullshit in the process. The good news is, there are a LOT of people that put time and effort into making sure stuff like that keeps working.

But, as things stand now I imagine this arms race is going to get serious when they actually start making more changes on the backend. Twitch has actually been able to make it basically impossible to watch streams with midroll ads without using the Actual Website (or an official app) because they do some really freak shit and completely fucking break the stream. Youtube can, and at some point will, Break Shit.

And yeah, if there's a youtube channel you like and you want to revisit their videos, and you have the space, you'll want to go download ALL of their shit because it may not be available in the future. If you're not old enough to remember things that were always around on the internet suddenly being NOT around, that's very much a thing and it probably will happen here at some point. Youtube-dl and yt-dlp will happily download entire channels for you if you wish, though sometimes it can involve some fuckery if the channel is REALLY big. Secret Base has years of videos you do NOT want before they got on their current format, as an example, and archiving that sucks shit.

If anyone wants I've got some hacky (read: sloppy, messy) python scripts that can help with that a lil.
