There is basically every reason to hate spotify. They're run by awful people (who use subscriber money to fund awful things), they support awful people (who they pay with subscriber money), they actively hurt those trying to make a living off of their creative passions both within their confines and those outside by setting the industry standard for insanely low pay for artists, if not just cutting them off completely.

If you want to use a music streaming service, sure, whatever. I get that some people just want sound in the background and don't wanna take the time to buy, organize, store, and sync a music library. Hell maybe you don't even want to find an internet radio station that plays the sub-sub-sub-sub-sub genre of music that scratches that itch just right. We all make some shit ass decisions with our money to make it through the day. Just don't promote those decisions is all I ask.

I'm always surprised last.fm is still around, feels like it's been there forever.

I remember using it eons ago and then realizing that I didn't actually like worrying about my listening stats getting horribly skewed because I wanted to listen to the same song 20 times in a row. But, rockbox has support for it so you can even get stats from your mp3 player!

Damn rockbox support is impressive! And it's definitely one of those services that has kinda magically just. Kept on trucking.

My main niggle with it is that, by virtue of reading YouTube, it catalogs all YouTube unless you turn it off entirely or manually weed it, but I've kinda just learned to not care.

ayo

I mean, streaming services (+ youtube if you wanna count that) are super low upfront energy compared to anything else, so I get why people want to use them. Last I checked internet radio is still about the same as it was 15 years ago, it's probably a chore to pull it up on your phone. Maintaining your own collection is WORK, full stop. It takes time, it takes effort, and honestly I think a lot of people just flat out don't care about music enough to put in that time. It's fine, I get it. Maintaining your own library is so much damn work, even DJs are starting to use streaming services instead to avoid that hassle and maintaining a music library is basically their damn job.

But yeah, anything but spotify. Better off pirating on youtube than spotify.

There's actually an app called Spotube which I have yet to use (YouTube LPs, Twitch streams, and podcasts tend to occupy almost 100% of my personal listening/watching), which, if I understand, can grab playlists from Spotify, then turns around and plays the audio from YouTube Music. Probably not the best solution, since it still involves Spotify, but at least they don't get to count their precious plays.
