Yes it's bad but let me specifically walk through the process as a user.
See a new post. It's an image, which has been autocropped by the UI so now the useful information that the artist put in the corner about what kind of update this is, is cropped out. So I click "show more"
If the image is too tall (like say, 1.275 times taller than wide, i.e. in any way tall), the info field where "show more" once was has now been moved below the visible part of the window, but I can now see the entire image. I can also now see the comments. I then click on the title to open the post page properly.
Only now, do I have any indication that there is an attached file. Which I can now download.
I'm adamant that this is some ploy to make people try the mobile app, hoping it will not be as bad, and proceed to either slurp as much data as possible or drive up some manger's metrics for app use uptake.
